I recently travelled from Shanghai to Beijing by bullet train on tickets purchased through Ctrip. I purchased the train tickets online with my credit card and picked them up at the train station. You just show the staff at the train station your passport and the train voucher that Ctrip gives you and they hand over your tickets. You don't even need to speak on Chinese. Once at the train station there were enough English signs to work out where to go, you simply find the gate printed on your ticket and scan your ticket to enter the train. On the train everything went smoothly, the seats are comfortable, the views are great and there is plenty of legroom. I can definitely recommend the train!
